About Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band was an American band who created music that has occasionally been dubbed "avant garde-blues". Their music was characterized by bluesy melodies, shambolic instrumentation, idiosyncratic, unbound timings, the growls and shrieks of Beefheart's vocals and his surreal, poetic lyrics. Throughout their career, the band's musical direction was tightly controlled by Don Van Vliet (1941 - 2010), aka Captain Beefheart, who Read more on Last.fm

This Captai ain't Tennile. Rock solid foundation sports just enough jagged edges to keep you off balance and comin' back for more. This album holds up more than 40 years since it was released. Bluesy and ballsy - throw a few of these tunes in your everyday mix and wake your head up!

Not a sellout by any measure. Everything on this album is in keeping with Don's love of blues/R&B/avant-garde jazz. Ultimately, this is a great blues-rock album which was his best effort at reaching a wide audience. If he had followed this with Shiny Beast, he would have been making great (and successful) records well into the 80's/

I don't think it sold so well, but this was Beefheart's one great shot at selling out. This thing really rocks, without sacrificing an ounce of integrity. From the itchy seduction of Lo Yo Yo to the outright beauty of Blue Million Miles and climaxing with the mind melting Big Eyed Beans from Venus, this is exhilarating fun. A total joy!
