An American Classic

One of the all-time-great albums. Back in the '60s, this is what we listened to in high school. Loved it then, love it now. Also check out "Clear Spot."

The first Beefheart album, perhaps his most accessible, and also one of his best. The music is one of the most strongly blues influenced of his albums. The changes in time signature are fewer, and simpler time signatures are used more often than in later albums. Odd harmonies are common. The lyrics are of course a combination of the psychedelic, surrealism, and the down to earth. Don van Vliet almost always had a great slide guitarist, but this had one of the best and best known slide guitarists ever, a young Ry Cooder.

One of the best records I've ever heard. I remember reading about " the captain" while reading an article about PJ HARVEY. It will change your life!
AWESOME!

This is the second best album from him next to trout mask replica. Please get trout mask replica on iTunes! This'll have to do for now...

I first heard this over 40 years ago, but the recording is older still, going on nearly 50 years. No-one knew what to make of Beefheart then, and he continues to be sui generis.
Safe As Milk strikes the balance between accessible, and way-too-arty (too much Zappa in Trout Mask). Every album after Clear Spot is either saccharine pop, or forced attempts to return to art rock. Safe is the best!
Captain Beefhearts Masterpiece

Safe As Milk is just a good as Trout Mask Replica (which iTunes is missing) and it is underrated compared to its fish faced predecessor.
RIP Captain Beefheart

I really do like this album. It has a lot of great psychedelic/progressive ideas in the songs, but this album isn't their masterpiece. This was only the beginning of Don Van Vliet's innovations. I-tunes, please get Trout Mask Replica!!!!!
Wow.

Thank you to Jack White for liking this band; otherwise i would have never taken an interest. Tracks...1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13 & 16 I really liked. Sure Nuff n Yes, I Do is a cover of a Muddy Waters song i think...bad a*s blues rock riff. Kind of in the same vein as Jack White's Death Letter Blues cover. Great Album.
