About Slowdive

Slowdive is a dream pop/shoegaze band that formed in 1989 in Reading, England, United Kingdom. Signed to Creation Records in 1990 and initially championed by the British music press, the band scored a UK top forty entry with their debut album Just For a Day. The band consists of Rachel Goswell (vocals/guitar), Neil Halstead (vocals/guitar), Nick Chaplin (bass), Christian Savill (guitar), and Simon Scott (drums, 1990-1994, 2014-present); additionally, Ian McCutcheon replaced Scott from 1994-1995. This album is soooo good. There is a reason why it is often placed in the top three best shoegaze albums. This album has so much character, texture, and atmosphere. Someone once described it as listening to music underwater and I feel like it’s a pretty accurate sum-up of the sound. But you can still pick out wonderful details and the washed-put quality of the music is one of the things that makes it great. Unlike “Loveless” by My Bloody Valentine, this album isn’t completely lost in noise. I respect that album but this one does it better for me emotionally. The songs feel more accessible and tangible than they do on other shoegaze projects, while still holding onto what makes this a shoegaze album. It has a timeless quality that is sure to sound great on any listening format of your choice.

  • A Different Flavor of Shoegaze

Slowdive’s second studio album continues with their wall of sound Shoegaze. But where “Just for a Day” was dreamy and wistful, “Souvlaki” explores a more melancholy tone. Brian Eno adds some more electronic/ambient touches to “Sing” and “Here She Comes”. “When the Sun Hits” has a beautifully layered triumphant feel. “Souvlaki Space Station”s rumbling bass line and doppler-like echoing guitars make you feel like you really are on a space station, but one that has been knocked by an asteroid and is spinning in an erratic orbit. And don’t even listen to “Dagger” if you are feeling suicidal.

One of my favorite shoegaze albums. Wonderful textures and sounds. Light, breathy vocals make is a little relaxing, even! Definitely worth the money. An essential for any shoegaze fan.

I have been a fan since 1992 and listened to hundreds of bands during that time and this is one album I can put on and still enjoy just as much if not more than the first time listening to it. It has definitely stood the test of time. One of the most underrated albums and band of all time.
  • The BEST 'Gaze album. Period.

I love My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, but I don't think that it is as good as it is made out to be. This album should've received all the praise Loveless got. This is far better, imo. This whole album is bliss. Great for road trips and is the epitome of what shoegaze is. This helped form the genre.
