  • Hauntingly beautiful

These songs are dripping with detached emotion. Sometimes the vocalists and instruments cry out in pain, sometimes ectasy. They tell the listener: "This is my offering. This is raw. This is what it is." Even so, the music has a beat and a groove. This is Mountain Music. Wussy's effort puts forth a beautiful and memorable landscape consisting of ordinary looking folk. Some lyrics are hilarious, particularly Yellow Cotton Dress. The official review on this album says that it lacks tongue and cheek cleverness, but that statement fails to explain the abundant evidence to the contrary. "Don't Leave Just Now" is a great American ballad. Kudos Wussy. Funeral Dress is America draped in its former glory.

This album is a good mix of styles - like Drive by Truckers - it covers a broad spectrum. It's also another example that lyrics can drive an albumn.
