About The Weeknd

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, popularly known as The Weeknd (born February 16, 1990 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada), is a Canadian R&B/hip-hop musician, singer-songwriter and record producer. He chose his stage name in tribute to when he was 17 years old, when, along with his friend La Mar Taylor, he dropped out of high school, took his mattress, and "left one weekend and never came home". However, his estranged former producer Jeremy Rose claims the name was his idea. Read more on Last.fm

Not feeling the super basic beat selections. I understand as an artist they have to evolve but Trilogy and Kissland have been his best music to present date in my opinion. Maybe he is too mainstream now to make music like that again, sucks😢.

The Weeknd is one of the most popular artists of modern music and I believe he deserves that. I was very excited to hear his follow up to After Hours (a definite must listen), and his continuation of his 80’s glam sound… and he didn’t disappoint. Produced by legendary music icon Quincy Jones, the album is reminiscent of Michael Jackson (i.e., Out of Time, Sacrifice, etc.). But we also see a new side of Abel in the penultimate track of the album, Less Than Zero. Backed by an acoustic guitar, Abel’s sound has indeed changed for the better. Also, the story has changed dramatically. Now a linear storyline, Dawn starts off with an enigmatic Jim Carrey voiced DJ, who makes very heavy handed threats(?) and Abel-performed authentic jingles like a regular radio station. I can’t wait for more videos or maybe a possible short film. The album sets itself up for more opportunities for remixes and artist collaborations. All in all, Dawn FM is an amazing display of 80’s music, FM radio, and Abel’s unique vocals and vulnerability. A definite must listen from the record breaking artist’s catalogue. Can’t wait to see what Abel and the XO team will release next. 1/12
